The United States Golf Association is conducting the 2008 Championship on the beautiful South Course at Torrey Pines Golf Course, which overlooks the dramatic coastline of San Diego, Calif.
Torrey Pines is municipally owned and this is only the second time that the Open has been conducted on a public course. In 2002, the Championship was played on the publicly owned Black Course at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, N.Y. This Open marks the first time the National Championship has been played in San Diego and the first time since 1948 that it has been conducted in Southern California.

USGA Championship - U.S. Open

The foundation of the United States Golf Association on Dec. 22, 1894 marked the formal organization of American golf, establishing a centralized body to write the Rules, conduct national championships and establish a national system of handicapping. 2008 U.S. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
San Diego golfers, along with the San Diego golf and hospitality industry get their "Big Break" with the selection of the Torrey Pines South Course to host the United States Golf Association (USGA) 2008 U.S. OPEN Golf Championship beginning June 12, 2008. Torrey Pines is only the second municipal golf course ever selected to host this prestigious golf event. The Black Course at Bethpage, N.Y. was the first in 2002.
San Diego is expected to roll-out the red carpet to accommodate the 40,000 or more fans that are expected to attend each day. Although San Diego has Super Bowl hosting experience, event organizers and city officials predict the U.S. OPEN at Torrey Pines will out perform past Super Bowls as the most economically profitable sporting event ever hosted by the City of San Diego. This high profile golf event will bring millions of dollars to the local economy.

About Us Open Championship
The United States Open Championship is the annual men's open golf tournament of the United States. It is staged by the United States Golf Association each June, scheduled such that the final round is always played on the 3rd Sunday of that month (Father's Day). It is one of the four major championships in men's golf and is on the official schedule of both the PGA Tour and the European Tour. The U.S. Open is staged at a variety of courses, and they are usually set up in such a way that low scoring is very difficult and there is a premium on accurate driving. Normally, an Open course is longer than normal and will have a high cut of rough (termed "Open rough" by the American press and fans), hilly greens (such as at Pinehurst No. 2 in 2005, which was described by Johnny Miller of NBC as "like trying to hit a ball on top of a VW Beetle") and pinched fairways. Some courses that are attempting to get on the rotation for the Open will normally be rebuilt to have these features, with Rees Jones being the most notable of the "Open Doctors" who take on these projects.
